The strange voice in the darkness so occupied my thoughts that I had quite forgotten what transpired at the Melancholy Revels until the next morning. As I knelt between rows of cabbages with Yralis, I heard voices close by and lifted my eyes to see several finely dressed men and women entering the garden, taking great care to avoid any smattering of mud and casting the most disdainful of looks at those occupied with the laborious task of cultivating the food that they would no doubt complain about heartily that very evening.

Pushing a thick lock of hair out of my sweaty face, I was chagrined to see that one of the men was Lord Frobern himself and, on his arm, Lady Antonia wearing an entirely impractical gown of pale celadon trimmed in ivory. Behind them were two other women I thought I recognized from the Revels, though I’d not paid much attention to them as all they’d done was hover and gasp and giggle behind hands that had never seen a day’s work. At the rear of the company was a man whose tunic was quite stretched over his rotund belly.

I ducked my head, hoping fervently that he’d not seen me, but my damnable red hair must’ve given me away. A pair of boots stopped near the patch of cabbages and a voice drawled: “I say, is that Mistress Briony?”
